Dear Ask The Doctor: I started a new medication this morning to go along with Norvasc which I am taking for blood pressure. The medicine is Hydrochorothiaz and I am taking 1/2 pill. I have experienced numbing of my cheeks off and on all day and feel somewhat lightheaded. Could this be an allergic reaction?
Dear Debbie: When starting a new blood pressure medications such as Hydrochlorothiazide certain side effects such as headaches and being lightheaded are very common. The reason for these side effects is that it can take four to six weeks for blood pressure medications to work optimally. The Hydrochlorothiazide is decreasing your blood pressure by decreasing and removing fluid in the body. This change in volume in your body can cause these side effects. As far as the numbness this is usually not a side effects of Hydrochlorothiazide. The numbness can be a side effect of Norvasc. Generally, this side effect can occur after 3-6 months after being on Norvasc. This will need to be monitored and if it persists it needs to be brought up with your family physician. |
