Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I'm taking Amoxicillin for my tonsillitis and I was told that it will heal in about three days but I will have to keep on taking medication for another week..if it is healed on day 3 but I still have to keep taking it, can I kiss my boyfriend when it is healed (but I still have some of the antibiotic to take) without him getting sick? Dear Mike: Amoxicillin is an antibiotic designed to kill certain bacteria and inhibit their reproduction. It is true that most antibiotics start to work within 48 hours of being in your system. However, it does take the full course to completely eradicate the infection. While you may feel better after 48 hours and the bacterial count is less, it is probably better to avoid intimate contact till you have completed your course of antibiotics. I hope this helps |
