Stomach Pain After Long Term Ibuprofen Use |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi there. I had back problems for some time that caused me pain and severe headaches. The root cause of that problem has been alieviated with rf tratment to the occipital nerve and physio. The problem I have is that I took quite a lot of ibuprofen whilst dealing with the pain. Sometimes if I was taking it frequently I would get severe stomach cramps, but if I stopped taking it for a w hile then everything would be fine and this only happened when I was taking it very frequently Now, however, if I take even one ibuprofen or even asprin I get these terrible pains straight away. Is this a big problem and what should I do? Many thanks Dear Andrew: The Ibuprofen is maybe one of the most used over-the-counter drugs all over United States; nevertheless, it is a well known fact that, as the rest of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories including Aspirin, Ibuprofen can produce an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, epigastric pain, heartburn, diarrhea, abdominal distress, nausea and vomiting, indigestion, constipation, abdominal cramps or pain, fullness of GI tract (bloating and flatulence) and also kidney problems. These events can occur at any time during the drug use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients are at greater risk for serious gastrointestinal events. In controlled clinical trials the percentage of patients reporting one or more gastrointestinal complaints ranged from 4% to 16%. The recommended daily dose is up to 3200mgs, above that dose there is risk of intoxication and higher risk also of gastrointestinas adverse events as described before. In the view of the gastrointestinal symptoms that you described after taking Ibuprofen, it is strongly recommended that you try another drug to control the pain, because clearly the Ibuprofen is not good for you. |
