ACD treatment for hypertension

Dear Ask The Doctor: IS IT OK TO TAKE LISINIPROL AND ATENOLOL AT THE SAME TIME? AND WHY WOULD A DR PRESCRIBE BOTH? I WAS JUST WONDERING WHY MY DR WOULD PRESCRIBE BOTH MEDICATIONS THAT WORK FOR THE SAME THING (HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE)
Dear GWEN: The combination of drugs you are taking are an ACE inhibitor (Lisinopril) and a Beta-Blocker (Atenolol). Beta-blockers are no longer considered suitable options for first-line drug therapy for hypertension (high blood pressure) treatment, due to their link with new-onset diabetes. A suitable alternative would include a Calcium channel antagonist or a Diuretic. The combination of either of these two drugs would work in addition to the Lisinopril, in order to maintain optimal Blood Pressure control. |
