Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been taking a CCB for the last three months, and have experienced a rapid heart rate, plus a systolic pressure of 160 over 95. My doctor just phoned in a prescription for a Beta Blocker to be taken with the CCB. Is this a safe practice? I'm 76 yrs old and work out on a regular basis at the fitness center. Thank you.
Dear Barbara: Hypertension treatment guidelines follow the ACD rule. In someone of your age, initial therapy could be with either a Calcium channel blocker or a Diuretic. If optimal blood pressure is not achieved the addition of an ACE inhibitor or Angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) would be the next step. Beta-blockers may be used as additional therapy usually if a patient has angina, history of previous heart attack or heart failure. The beta-blocker in your case may be to control your rapid heart rate. I advise discussing this with your family doctor, if you have further queries. |
