Dear Ask The Doctor: Im a UK resident currently on a working holida visa in Australia and I dont know anything about the medical system here. So was wondering what to do. I thought I might of been pregnant as I normaly have a very regular 28 day cycle and I have NEVER been more than 1day late. I havnt benn on birth control for over 8 months. but this month I was 2 weeks late. I also had some symptoms- I felt sick quite a lot, sore breasts, I had a lot of headaches, really tired and urinating more. I took a few home pregnany tests in that time but they were negative. I finaly got my 'period' but it was really different to my normal one. It was a lot lighter and it was also a lot darker in colour and I had no pain at all whereas the last 2 months its been very painful for me. I now has a weird dicomfort ache on the left side of my lower abdominal area. Im still getting painful headaches, and I have pain in my lower back and sore left shoulder blade. I looked up some symptom online and was wondering if there could be a large cyst on my ovary or if I could be an ecopic pregnancy. Dont know if its just me worrying as i think I have bad anxiety. Thank you if anyone can help.
Dear Emma: There are many causes of irregular periods with polycystic ovarian syndrome being one of them. The other causes could be thyroid hormone problems and alterations in FSH/LH levels. I would not be worried just yet and would advise you to monitor your periods. If the pain worsens and you continue having irregular periods, then you may need an evaluation by an obstetrician. |
