Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 16 years old and I have never had a period. Like I said I am 16, I will be 17 in two months. I am 6 feet tall and I weigh 195. I started getting pubic, leg, and armpit hair at 11 years old. I have breasts but the are very small, they started growing at about 13 and the haven't got any bigger. I have acne. And I have a little mustache that we bleach. I havve talked to my doctor but she said I am a late bloomer. Will I start soon? I know I am overweight, but 8I have not gained or lost a major amount of weight in a while. I am active, I ride and mess with horses for maybe 2 hours a day plus just normal stuff. All in all I spend about 4 hours a day outsude.Everyone tells me I should just be happy that I haven't started but it is driving me crazy! What do you think?
Dear Britt: Primary amenorrhea is failure of menses to start by the age of 14 years without signs of secondary sexual development or by the age of 16 years in girls with normal secondary sexual characteristics.
In most cases it is commonly causes by a constitutional delay in puberty. However, genetic, hypothalamic, pituitary, ovarian and uterine factors may need to be rules out. I would suggest that you consult your doctor for further evaluation and tests to rule out causes of primary amenorrhea. |
