Missed period after surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am recovering from major ankle surgery that I had about 3 and 1/2 weeks ago. In the emergency room, before my surgery, they took a urine sample- do they test for pregnancy? The chances of me being pregnant (I believe are extremely slim)- my last cycle started on March 25th and the last time I had sex was 2 days into my last cycle (and my partner did not ejaculate inside of me). But now my period is a few days late. Is it possible for surgery to cause a missed/late period?
Dear Carol: A pregnancy test is not routinely done prior to surgery. However, your surgeon may have done a pregnancy test since they intended to use xrays during the surgery which could be harmful to an unborn baby.
Surgery may alter the menstrual cycle somewhat but if you suspect that you may indeed be pregnant you should simply do a home pregnancy test to ind out for sure. |
