Dear Ask The Doctor: I have always had irregualr periods, but they started to get more regular about one every 35-38 days, i had unprotected sex at the end of October, and had spotting the next day, but afew days later my doctor not knowing this proscribed me the pill to regulate my periods, now on the pill i have a period at the same time every month, so assumed i could not be pregnant. But i have recently been putting on weight, and would describe my stomach as looking bloated Other than this my boobs have been hurt and i've been very tired and hungry, but this could all be to do with being a teenager. I dont know if im only getting periods because of the pill, or if i could be pregnant. I am only 15 and an scared about talking to anyone about it. I did take a test, but this was within a week of the sex and was negative. I don't know if it is possible for me to be pregnant, so any advice would really help.
Dear Lottie: The fact that you took the pregnancy test and it was negative is very suggestive of not being pregnant. The OCP's are a combination of estrogen and progesterone pilss that help regulate your period and thus can also lead to symptoms like tender breasts, some bloating and general tiredness and headache. The fact that you are getting your periods regulary now on the ocp means that they are working as they should. If however the symptoms continue you may need to change the type of OCP you are taking. Talk to your doctor abou this. All the best. |
