Light Bleeding Before Period in Young Female

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been light bleeding for two days the second a bit heavier than the first, this is eight days before my birth control pill (lutera). I take my pill at 6:33 am daily for over two years and nothing like this has ever happend, what are some of the possible reasons?
Dear Tanya: I would advise simple observation in your case and only see a doctor if the bleeding does not stop or irregular patterns of bleeding continue. This may actually be idiopathic (meaning no identifiable cause) but known causes in young females of child bearing age include:
- Stress
- Poor diet
- Recent change in weight
- Anemia
- Pernicious anemia
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Thyroid disorder
- Pituitary disorder
- Ovarian dysfunction
- Pregnancy
- Miscarriage
- Uterine Mass
- Uterine Cancer
- Cervical Cancer
- Missed does of birth control pill
- Late dose of birth control pill
- STD
The most common cause encountered in my practice is stress. |
