Irregular menstrual cycle and chance of pregnancy

Dear Ask The Doctor: I haven't had my period for already three years. My boyfriends and I have sex all the time. We don't use a condom and he shoots in my all the time. I've heard rumors that you can't get pregnant if you have an irregular menstrual cycle. Is that true. I've taken several pregnancy tests and I am not pregnant. It seems that the rumors are true. I just want to double check. Were not trying to conceive a child. When I didn't have it for one year, I went to the doctor. They gave me pills, but I only got my period for one week. I never went back to the doctor, because.. Who wants to get there period? Well, is this going to mess me up in th future when I want to have a child!?!
Dear Raylynn: Typically the interval between periods should be 28-30 days. Each menstrual cycle is divided into 2 phases the proliferative phase ( can be variable in each woman ) and the secretory phase ( which is always 14 days long and is fixed) . It is during this phase that the woman is fertile and will get pregnant if she has unprotected intercourse. So inspite of you having irregular cycles the secretory phase in all your cycles remains 14 days prior to your next period so there are always chances that you could get pregnant, However having said this since your cycles are irregular it may be difficult to concieve and thus you have not gotten pregnant so far. I however advice you to see you gynecologist as not getting periods for 3 years is not normal and your hormonal level may need to be checked up. If ignored this could lead to complications and difficulty concieving later on in life. |
