Dear Ask The Doctor: Ever since i started my menstraul cycle i never missed or was never late to have my period. Last yr Dec 2010 was the first month i got my period late that was 8 days after i was due for my period, then for 2 months it came back to normal and again this month my period was due on 20th and till now i havent got it...what can the possible reasons be for the delay?
Dear Deborah: There are many causes that may lead to delayed periods. Usually the menstrual cycle is between 28-30 days. This also is dependant on the correct balance between the various female horomones. Most of the time a delay of +/- 4-5 days is considered normal and variable. However some other causes of irregular/missed periods are : thyroid issues, Polycystic ovarian syndrome, imbalance of hormones due to stress, medication, pregnancy, prolactin secreting tumor, premature ovarian failure. In your case it seems that there may just be a temporary disbalance in the hormonal levels which is leading to slightly delayed periods. I would advice you to keep a check on the same and if continually delayed or you are experiencing irregularity or increased bleeding then you need to see your GP for a thorough physical examination and further testing like hormonal levels, ultrasound of the pelvis etc which may lead us to the cause. |
