PCOS: How to Regulate Menstrual Periods

Dear Ask The Doctor: I haven't had a period since before I fell pregnant, my baby is now 11 and a half months of age. I never had regular periods before I fell pregnant. We want to try for another baby but need periods first, do you have any advise on how to get them back please?
First thing you need to do is to rule out pregnancy. In cases of amenorrhea (absence of menstrual period), pregnancy should be ruled out first. You may try doing a home pregnancy test kit or request your doctor for blood tests or ultrasound perhaps to confirm or rule out pregnancy. Once that has been done, other causes of the amenorrhea should be entertained. You mentioned you have PCOS, which also causes menstrual irregularities, including amenorrhea. You may want to go back to your OB Gyne and ask about the PCOS, I think the PCOS should be treated; it may be the root cause of your amenorrhea. Some women w/ PCOS are started w/ birth control pills to gain regular menstrual periods but ask a prescription from your OB and ask her opinion on what should be the best move in your case. Some tests or procedures may be needed before interventions will be done. I wish you well always and good luck. |
