Getting Period after Miscarriage

Dear Ask The Doctor: I just had a miscarriage on sept. 1, 2009. I recently had a DNC on sept. 3, 2009. Today is sept. 17, and i have not yet started my menstrual cycle. how much longer will it take for my menstrual cycle to occur?
Dear Kallie: The female cycle is under the regulation of a combination of hormones. The hormone cycle that induces ovulation stops in pregnancy. After a miscarriage or abortion, while the pregnancy is terminated, the hormone cycle does not return to its pre pregnancy state for some time. The amount of time it takes is highly variable and depends on previous regularity of your cycle, smoking history, weight, health status, medications and stress levels. On average, I advise my patients to get plenty of rest, relaxation and wait approximately a month for the cycle to return to its previous regularity. If your cycle does not return within a month, I would perform a Bhcg test to verify the pregnancy has been terminated. Some doctors will perform the Bhcg test earlier than one month.
I hope this helps |
