Getting Pregnant After a Miscarriage

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, I've been trying to get pregnant after having a miscarriage last june. I already have a 3 year old so I therefore know that I am able to have kids. I used to be on a very regular, 28 day cylce. After the miscarriage, I became regular with a 35 day cycle. I am now 3 days late but pregnancy tests show that I am not pregnant. I would just like to know if there are sideaffects associated to having had a miscarriage. Can this cause infertility or underlying issues? I will say that I have not made any changes (diet/exercise, stress, etc).
Dear Sabrina: I understand your worry about your miscarriage history and fertility. This loss of a confirmed pregnancy before 24 weeks of pregnancy is not an uncommon event and can be present in 15 to 20 % of pregnant women. There is no specific reason for this but there are a serious of factors that could predispose to these events such as age more than 35, physical injury, exposure to chemicals, history of previous miscarriage (more than 2) and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Let me reassure you that there is no direct relation between miscarriage and infertility. Although having a miscarriage increases the chances of having another one, most women do not have problems in subsequent pregnancies. If you are preparing for your next pregnancy, it would be recommended for you to start taking your vitamins/minerals especially containing iron and folate and comply with your follow ups. I wish you the best. |
