I'm Having Pain During Menses. |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I 35 years old and stopped taking my birth control about 4-5 months ago because i would like to have one more child. About 4-5 days before my period was to start I was feeling nauseous all day, smells were bothering me and I thought that maybe I could have been pregnant. A few days before my period started we decided to get a pregnancy test and it came up negative. I started my period 2 days later and it seemed to be normal just heavier cramping than normal. 2 days later I had some severe cramping for about 20 minutes straight, so bad it brought tears to my eyes, which never happens. Could I have had a miscarriage? Dear Billie:Since your pregnancy test was negative, a miscarriage is highly unlikely. What you have described here suggests that you are likely suffering from menstrual cramps of Dysmenorrhea. These cramps can range from mild to severe and often can limit day to day activities. There are two types of Dysmenorrhea. Primary Dysmenorrhea is where there is no underlying gynecological caue of pain and Seccondary Dysmenorrhea where some underlying gynecological condition is the cause of the pain. Some things that you could do to reduce the pain and cramping are adequate rest and sleep, regular exercise/yoga, a heating pad applied to the abdomen. Drugs include Paracetamol (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil) or Naproxen (Aleve) can be taken if the pain becomes severe. If the symptoms continue, futher work-up may be necessary to diagnose any underlying cause of the pain. Take care.
