Period twice this month

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, I'm on birth control (Loestrin Fe) and I had sex on February 26, no condom but he pulled out. I didn't get my period for March. I did get it on April 4 and it lasted 3 days. But then I got it again on April 11, and I still have it today (April 17). I'm having bad cramps and clotting. I don't know what is going on and I'm terrified.

Dear Anonymous:

I comprehend how worried you are about your irregular menstruation. If you had started your Loestrin FE 24 around the last 3 cycles, this could be a reason for your irregular menses. However if you have been taking your birth control pills for more than 3 months, other causes of hormonal imbalance might need to be ruled out.

Changes in diet, exercise, stress and surely anxiety, poor nutrition, weight gain or loss can also explain sudden changes in your menses volume and duration. I would suggest you to consult your gynecologist to rule out after a more detailed examination the cause of your imbalance. In the meantime watch for signs of fatigue, lightheadedness and seek immediate attention if present.  I wish you the best.
