How long do I wait to get a blood test if home pregnancy tests are negative

Dear Ask The Doctor: Goodmorning! I have been off birth control since August and my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant since September. This month I was due to get my period on Monday, still have no gotten it. I have taken an at home test (First response) Today and it was negative. I also took an E.P.T. test on Tuesday. Both were negative. My cycle is now on day 34. Should I be worried about anything yet or just wait a few more days. My period when off birth control is not usually 28 days, and more like 30, but I don't want to be pregnant and not know. Since being off birth control this has been the longest cycle so far. Thank you for your time, Shelby
Dear Shelby: Home pregnancy test and especially EPTs are fairly accurate in detecting pregnancy. It usually takes 10-14 days after implantation for the HCG levels to reach a minimum level at which it can be detected via these tests. For more accurate and earlier determination of pregnancy you can do a pregnancy blood test.
Sometimes stress, excessive exercises and hormonal imbalances may lead to a delayed periods. You will need to consult your doctor if you experience delayed or irregular periods. |
