Am I pregnant or do I have an infection?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My period is about 6 days late, severe abdominal pain, thick white discharge (not clumpy like a yeast infection), and nausea. I took two pregnancy tests, both negative. What else could this be?
Dear Jessica: There could be several reason for a late period. Once pregnancy has been ruled out, other causes like stress, decreased calorie intake, excessive exercise and hormonal imbalance needs to be looked into. However, I would advise you to take another pregnancy test after a week or two, just to be sure that it is not pregnancy. Sometime the levels of pregnancy hormones are too low to be detected. If your periods have not returned to normal after 2-3 cycles or if your discharge increase or becomes foul smelling, I would suggest consulting your doctor then. |
