Stopping birth control pills

Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently stopped taking birth control pills, and my first period after stopping was normal, but now am almost a week late for my second period after stopping. I took a pregnancy test this morning and it was negative. Is there something wrong? Could I still be pregnant even though the test was negative?
Dear Rebekah: After discontinuing oral contraceptives, the body enters a stage in which it has to create once again its own hormones for the menstrual cycle to occur. It has been observed according to some studies that Cycle disturbances (defined as a luteal phase length of less than 10 days or a cycle length greater than 35 days) were more frequent in the post-pill group from the next cycle after stopping the pills until the seventh cycle. It depends on how fast the body recovers its own ability to produce hormones. This has to do only with cycle length; however the possibility of pregnancy is still present and should be ruled out if there was unprotected sex. I suggest you to wait a couple of days and test for pregnancy again. I wish you the best. |
