Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 26 years old. I have never missed a period since I have been having them. My last period was Feb. 26 or 27, 2010. Today is April 10, 2010. I still havent got my period. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests and they all came up negative. Today I went and got a serum test and that cmae up negative as well. So I guess what I am asking, is there still a chance that I could be pregnant and I just dont have the hormone yet? My calculations are I should be around 6 weeks now. But, still no period and all the tests have come up negative. If there is no chance that I could be pregnant then what could it be? I have never had this happen to me before. I have always had my periods... PLEASE HELP!!!
Dear Stefanie: I realize your concern about possible pregnancy. If you were pregnant, at this time you would definitely had a positive test especially with a Blood pregnancy test.Let me reassure that missed periods caused by Hormonal imbalances are very common. Missed periods, too frequent periods, spotting, or bouts of heavy clotting and bleeding are usually caused by an underlying hormonal imbalance that is easily treated.Missed periods can be present in women at least once in their life and there are many factors that could cause them such as significant weight gain or loss, Over-exercise, Poor nutrition (or a diet too high in carbohydrates), Smoking, Drug use, Caffeine, Excessive alcohol use (interfering with how the liver metabolizes estrogen and progesterone), Eating disorders and very commonly Increased stress and Anxiety.I would suggest you to consult your Gynecologist if you missed your next period that should be in the next few days. A more detailed history and examination with possible blood work to evaluate your hormonal levels might be needed. I wish you the best. |
