Pregnancy and prolactinema |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm a 31 yr old female with pituitary tumor producing to much prolactin. I am taking Dostinex (cabergoline) 3 times a week. My level about 5 weeks ago had came down from appx. 275 to 61. I will go this week and get blood test to see how it looks now. I started my period 3 months ago. The first cycle came at about 8 weeks of medication, the second came on time to the day, lasted and flowed like a normal period both times. The 3rd month is here and I am a week late so far. I took a home pregnancy test and got negative results. So my question is, is it possible to have a neg. pregnancy test with prolactinemia, and actually be pregnant? Dear Gloria: Prolactinoma is a condition in which a noncancerous tumor (adenoma) of the pituitary gland in your brain overproduces the hormone prolactin. Irregular menstrual periods (oligomenorrhea) or lack of menstrual periods (amenorrhea) and Milky discharge from the breasts (galactorrhea) when not pregnant or breast-feeding can be the two most common symptoms found in this condition. This excess in production can be managed by simple medication treatment; Medications may also shrink the tumor. However, long-term treatment with medications is generally necessary and most importantly would help with infertility which is common in high levels of prolactin. False negative pregnancy tests cannot be produced by high levels of prolactin, the pregnancy test detects HCG hormone which is a hormone produced right after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterus. I would suggest you to take another pregnancy test since this tests are not 100% effective, if you plan to become pregnant o would suggest you to consult your endocrinologist about your medications, they might need to be adjusted right after you become pregnant. |
