Dear Ask The Doctor: I stopped taking my birth control pill June 12th because my husband and I are wanting to plan a pregnancy so I wanted to give my body time to have a normal period or two before we started trying. We've been using condoms to avoid an unplanned pregnancy and as of right now I have not had a period since I stopped taking my birth control pill. I am 90% it's not a pregnancy but I am concerned that if I'm not having a regular period that this will hurt our chances of getting pregnant in the very near future. So, in short my question is, if I'm not having a period, can I still get pregnant? Dear Samantha: Yes a great percentage of women can become pregnant immediately after stopping taking their contraceptive pills. I agree with you and I would also recommend waiting for at least one more cycle before trying to conceive, since this would reestablish your natural hormone production and cycles without the intervention of artificial hormones contained in the pills. On the other hand and due to this reason as well, some women would need at least 2 to 3 cycles to restore their normal natural hormone production, this might also be another reason for missed periods. I would suggest you to take a home pregnancy test to rule out this possibility first. If the results were negative, don’t panic and wait until your next cycle. Your body might probable need some time to start producing hormones again. |
