Missed Period

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been taking birth control for about for years now. I am in the military and currently deployed. My period has been acting wierd ever since May. I took multiple pregnancy tests and all of them came back negative. This month when I thought my period was going to start, it never started. What could be the cause of this?

Dear Lindsey:

There are several conditions that might cause your menstrual irregularities; certainly the first one to rule out is pregnancy.

If you are not pregnant, other causes of missed or irregular periods include:

  • Excessive weight loss or gain. Although low body weight is a common cause of missed or irregular periods, obesity also can cause menstrual problems.
  • Eating disorders.
  • Increased exercise. Missed periods are common in athletes.
  • Emotional stress.
  • Illness.
  • Hormone problems. This may cause a change in the levels of the hormones that the body needs to support menstruation.

All of these conditions can cause hormonal imbalance and delay your menses, since you are in the military I assume that you are under augmented exercise. I would suggest you to consult a gynecologist if your menses are still late for a more detailed evaluation and measure of your hormones levels.
