Irregular periods |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I only menstruate once to twice a year and am getting worried. I have been to alot of doctors, tried all medication but still not regular? What should I do? Dear Gizella: I realize that you are worried about your lack of menses. Amenorrhea is a term used to describe absence of menstruation, one or more missed menstrual periods. If you were previously menstruating but then stopped having periods, you will fall in the diagnosis of secondary amenorrhea. The most common cause of this is pregnancy, however when this is not a possibility your physician might need to evaluate you to rule out the other different possibilities. The medication that you are taking Triphasil, has amenorrhea as a side effect. When oral contraceptives are stopped, it may take three to six months to resume regular ovulation and menstruation. Certainly this might probably be causing your absence of menses. I would like you to test for thyroid hormone levels and also sexual hormone levels to rule out dysfunction of your thyroid and ovaries, these two are also common causes of amenorrhea as well as diet changes exercise, weight loss and even stress. I would recommend you to stop taking your contraceptives to rule out amenorrhea as a side effect form them and then if your menses still don’t show, have your PCP evaluate you for the causes described above. I wish you the best. |
