Dear Ask The Doctor: I have missed 2 periods. There is no chance that I can be pregnant due to practicing abstinance. I am 20 years old and I have never had anything like this happen to me. Please tell me how to fix it. I am not stressed, nor do I over excersise. I am not under weight or over weight. I do not starve myself or over eat. I have a very well balanced life style.
Dear Ann: There are various causes of Secondary Amenorhea( absence of periods after having normal periods before). The main ones are pregnancy, stress, low body weight or anorexia. However you are claiming that you cannot have either of these. The other causes include: Polycystic ovarian syndrome, Anovulatory cycle ( common in females who have recently started menstruating) , Thyroid dysfunction ( can get other symptoms like heat/cold intolerance, dry skin, brittle hair, weight gain/loss etc) , Certain medications, hormonal imbalance due to prolactinoma ( tumor in the pituatary gland) . From the information you have given me it is difficult to reach to a conclusive diagnosis and I advice you to consult your gynecologist for further testing like thyroid hormonal level, prgesterone challenge test, FSH/lH levels and an ultrasound of your pelvis which will give us a clearer picture of the situtation. |
