Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi my cousin had sexual intercourses with her boyfriend last friday and she was supposed to get her period on sunday or saturday but its already tuesday and she hasnt gotten it. can she take a pregnancy test? Dear Carolina: So as I understand your cousins period is delayed by 2-3 days. Typically she could take a prenancy test right now. However it is important to remember that home pregnancy tests pick up the level of Beta HCG in the urine. Typically while some tests can pick up a lower level of this hormone early on the best time to carry out this test is about 5-7 days after a missed period. Thus a negative test may not mean that pregnancy is not present but may just indicate that the level of the hormone is too low to be detected by the test. You can thus repeat the same. Also keep a look out for signs of pregnancy like breast tenderness, frequent urination, mood changes, general weakness and fatigue. |
