Pregnancy and tubal ligation

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had my tubes tied almost a year ago. The last time of intercourse was 3-4 months ago and have had regular periods since. This month, I am almost two weeks late. I have taken two home pregnancy tests that said they were negative. Also I have been getting the signs of having a menstrual cycle. Eating chocolate, cramps, back aches, but nothing has come yet. Is it possible I could be pregnant even though my tubes are tied and I have not had intercourse for the past 3-4 months?
Dear Nichola: It is highly unlikely that you might be pregnant because you have not had sexual intercourse in the last 3-4 months. Sometimes tubal ligation can however fail and the egg can get through thus leading to a pregnancy. However since you havent bee sexually active this is easily ruled out. There may be other causes leading to these symptoms like stress, hormonal imbalance or just a delayed period. Since you are getting PMS signs you may expect your period soon. However is this does not happen please see your physician for a more complete check up and certain tests like hormonal levels if needed. All the best. |
