Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been on birth control for 2 years, and my last period started on april 29th. i was supposed to start a new pill pack on the next sunday which was may 8th. i accidentally took the sugar pills before i realized my mistake, then i saw my doctor and she told me to stop the birth control all together. this means that i have not been on any hormonal birth control since april 30th. in that period, i had both protected and unprotected sex and he did come inside me 2 times before i realized my mistake (around may 8th). i'm just trying to figure out when exactly my missed period would be so that i know when i am considered late. i don't know if it would be last friday, because its28 days since my last period, or june 5th because if i had been on my birth control consistently this month that is when i would have started a new pack. i just want to know when i should take a pregnancy test if i dont get my period
Dear Amy: Once you stop the birth control pills, your periods may be irregular for a few cycles with only spotting or delayed, heavy bleeding, until your ovulation resumes regularly. Thus it may be difficult to exact any due date for your periods, however if they tend to be regular you should have your periods around the day you would have started the sugar pills and not when you would have started a new pack. This is because when you stop or withdraw the external supply of hormones (which is in the form of active birth control pills), it leads to withdrawal bleeding or in other words you have your periods. So, you may take a pregnancy test to clear your doubts.
