Dear Ask The Doctor: I am going to Brazil on the 1st July, I will need vaccinations including yellow fever. I saw that you should not have yellow fever vaccination if you are pregnant. I have an app that I record my cycle on, have done since jan 2011, on average my cycles are on average 27 days, one was 26 and one was 29 I am now on day 32 of my cycle. I had intercourse only twice in this cycle, on the 27th and 28th May, (and not at all on the last cycle). My question is, when is the earliest I can take a pregnancy test and the latest I can have injections (I have not had any injections in the past 9 years and will not be going to a malaria risk area)
Dear Bethan: The most accurate results for a pregnancy test will not occur until after your due period. However you may take the test as early as 10 days after unprotected sex, but the accuracy of the expected results may not be absolute. If you are already past due date, you might as well take the home pregnancy test for confirmation. You may require to have a tetanus shot, yellow fever, hepatitis A and B and typhoid vaccines. Regarding yellow fever vaccination, you may take the vaccine before 10 days at the latest, before you start your journey. Yellow fever vaccine is a live vaccine that is not recommended during pregnancy, due to possible harm to the unborn baby. Hepatitis vaccines should be taken at least 2 weeks before travel. Hope this helps.
