Dear Ask The Doctor: I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend. I let 2 days passed and I took the plan B pill. I continued on having unprotected sex and then I let 3 days passed and I took another Plan B pill. After a few days I started bleeding. My last regular menstrual cycle was on April 16. The vaginal bleeding I mentioned started on May 5 and lasted for about 5 days. Since then, I haven't had my menstrual cycle. Is the vaginal bleeding after taking the pill a menstrual cycle? I took two pregnancy test and they were both negative. However, I experience nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, my breasts are tender, and many other pregnancy symptoms. What can be wrong with me?
Plan B pill is effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex. Effectivity is ~90-95% when taken within 24 hours and decreases to ~55-60% when taken within 72 hours (day 3). The second plan B pill you took may not have been effective and with the symptoms you are having, it is possible you are pregnant. Home pregnancy tests are not 100% accurate; it is also best done in the morning (first morning urine upon waking up) because the urine has the highest concentration of detectable hormones during this time. I would suggest for you to see a doctor and have a blood pregnancy test done, or better yet an ultrasound. If you are not planning on having a baby please practice safe sex always. I do hope this helps and take care always. |
