Late Period after surgery and stopping birth control

Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently had abdominal liposuction. Leading up to the surgery, my surgeon recommended I stop Nuva Ring to help prevent clotting during surgery. My last period started Friday, July 3. I should have started a new Nuva Ring the following Monday June 3 but did not start one. I then had surgery on Monday, June 27. Technically if I had been on the Nuva Ring, my period would have started the Friday after my surgery, around July 1. But it's now July 13, so my period is about 2 weeks late. Is it normal to have a late period after major surgery - 6 liters of fat removed - and getting off birth control for the first time in 5 years?
Dear Amy: Major surgery is a stressful situation for the human body. It is not uncommon for women to experience changes in the their menstrual cycle following a surgical procedure. There is no cause for concern. You may restart your contraceptive which will help to return your menstrual cycle to normal. |
