Severe nausea and acidity during pregnancy

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 8 weeks pregnant and suffer from morning sickness, almost throughout the day. i seem to be unable to keep down even water. i live in bahrain and the doctor prescribed metoclopramide, which does not seem to work. can you please give suggestions to relieve this constant nausea and severe acidity?

Dear Prerma: Nausea and vomiting commonly occurs between 5-18 weeks of pregnancy, this is often termed as "morning sickness", the severity of these symptoms can vary. If the nausea and vomiting is increased in severity, a diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum needs to be ruled out by your doctor.Because of the increased episodes of vomiting, it is important to keep drinking plenty of water to keep the body well hydrated. There are certain things you could do at home to decrease the symptoms of nausea and vomiting.

  1. Eat small meals or snacks often so your stomach does not become empty (for example, every 2 hours). Try not to skip meals. Try eating cold food instead of hot. Sniffing lemons or ginger can sometimes relieve an upset stomach.
  2. Drink small amounts of fluids frequently during the day.
  3. Get plenty of rest since nausea tends to worsen when a woman is tired. Try napping during the day.

If these measures do not help, consult your doctor for the use of Doxylamine succinate/pyridoxine HCI (Diclectin). This is a safe and effective prescription medication that can help women when nausea and vomiting affect their well-being and daily activities.
