Long term side effects of the Birth Control Pill |
|
DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: How long is it safe to be on the birth control pill? What could possibly happen if anything? DEAR SARA: This is a common question. The Birth control pill is one of the most commonly prescribed medications in my practice and the most popular type of birth control. Other reasons for being on the birth control pill may include management of menstrual related symptoms or regulation of your menstrual cycle. I think it is important to realize that like all medications, it too has side effects. Certain forms of the birth control pill have been shown to increase your risk of blood clots, heart attacks, strokes and gallbladder disease. It’s effect on breast cancer is still unknown. The longer you are on the pill, the longer you are at risk of these side effects. If you are over 35 you may also be at increased risk – especially if you smoke. Fortunately, the risks occur in only a very small percentage of women and should be discussed with your doctor. In summary, all medications have side effects and need to be weighed with pros and cons. The majority of women have no side effects or complication on the birth control pill but you must discuss this with your doctor first to see if it is right for you. |
