Dear Ask The Doctor: What to expect when coming off of birth control after 10 years of being on it?
To answer the obvious, you could get pregnant when you come off it, even immediately after. Basically, when your body is rid off the hormones from the contraception, it will produce its own hormones. Menstrual irregularities are common within 2-3 months from discontinuation then usually, the cycles become regular. If prior to starting the pill your periods were regular, it is likely it will go back to its regular cycle. But in a few women, periods become irregular after discontinuation of the pill. Withdrawal bleeds are common; if you still don’t have a period 3-4 months after discontinuation, then you should see your doctor promptly. Birth control pills also help improve acne; if you had acne problems prior, it may appear again. I do hope this helps and take care always. |
