DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: Is Rogaine safe to use? I need it for more facial hair and want to be able to grow a beard!
DEAR FRANK: From what I've heard from fellow physicians, there are some serious side effects from the use of rogaine: for example, heart palpitations. Minoxidil was invented as a strong drug to reduce blood pressure, by the way, not raise it, and that's where the potential hazards come from. There are also some lesser side effects, such as skin irritation and permanent unwanted hair growth (example: hair on the temples). Facial skin absorbs more of the product into the bloodstream than scalp skin does, and that's why a product considered safe for the scalp is not approved by the FDA for facial use. The board doesn't endorse minox for anyone's face, but of course some guys do experiment with it. Many men continue their unaided beard development through their 20s, so you can expect to get continuing development for several years without taking on the side-effects. Besides, you should look into safer approaches first, such as taking helpful vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. If you'd like some particular advice on your beard potential go see your family physician.
