Are Breast Implants Safe?

DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: I am not happy with my breasts and am lacking confidence. I feel breast implants will give me the confidence I need.

DEAR KELLY: How safe are breast implants have been a debatable topic for long. Many women who have either undergone a breast augmentation or are planning to go for such implants want to know how safe the procedure is. Though many people believe breast augmentation procedures to be safe, there are the following health risks that are associated with such implants:

Local complications: These are considered to be the primary health concern of getting such implants. These complications can be either minor or serious. For example, some infections can cause toxic shock syndrome that in turn may trigger the onset of gangrene or even cause death. The most common complications like asymmetry, scarring, loss of sensation, need to undergo an additional surgery, hardness and pain are generally not life threatening. However, they can have a negative impact on the quality of life.

Rupture: Breast implants will break sooner or later. So, you will need to remove or replace them after a certain period of time. Saline implants need to be removed as they get deflated quickly. On the other hand, silicone gel implants require removal as the silicone has chances of leaking out, which can cause the gel to drift outside the breast area.

Autoimmune diseases: Though the results are still debatable, some research studies have shown the increase of autoimmune diseases in those women who had breast augmentations.

Breast Cancer: As most of the breast implants make the mammography image of a tumor incomprehensible, they are considered to obstruct the timely detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Though no research evidence indicate that implants cause breast cancer, the delay in diagnosis caused by these implants could potentially demand more radical surgery or may even prove to be fatal.

Despite the aforesaid health risks, you can still have safe breast implants. You may opt for trilucent breast augmentations instead of the silicone or saline ones, as the former consists of a soybean oil-based filler that is designed to interfere less with mammograms. Many women even choose autologous tissue transfer as an alternative to breast augmentations. So, make an informed choice when you decide to undergo breast implants.
