Healing of Surgical Scars After Cosmetic Procedure

Dear Ask The Doctor: I just had an elective surgical cosmetic procedure. What can I do to enhance the healing of the Scar. Thank you for your advice.

Dear Shah Ruk: Surgical scars generally heal well. In some persons hypertrophic or keloid scars may develop. A hypertrophic scar or keloid scar is one that grows more than is normally expected. These scars are sometimes complicated by redness and burning, such as you describe, even years after surgery.

Silicone cream, available over-the-counter, may help with the symptoms you are experiencing. Other treatments available include steroid injections, zinc oxide therapy and vitamin E therapy. You should consult your dermatologist if over-the-counter medications fail.
