Dear Ask The Doctor: What are symtoms of pubic lice
Dear Torry: Pubic lice or Crabs are parasites found primarily in the pubic or genital area of humans. Pubic lice have three forms: the egg (also called a nit), the nymph, and the adult. The symptoms include itching in the genital area and visible nit or crawling of the lice. The nits or eggs are found firmly attached to the hair shaft. They are oval, usually yellow to white and take about 6-10 days to hatch. Nymphs take about 2-3 weeks after hatching to mature into adults capable of reproducing. Pubic lice can be treated using lotion for application containing 1% permethrin or a mousse containing pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide available over-the-counter. You may also visit your doctor for prescription treatments which includes lindane shampoo, malathion lotion etc.
