Yeast infections – When to Call Your Doctor?

DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: What are the symptoms of a yeast infection? How do I know I have one? Can I give it to my boyfriend?

DEAR SHELLY: Common symptoms of a yeast infection include a white vaginal discharge, itchiness or burning sensation, vaginal pain during sexual activity and possibly an odor to the discharge.  Yeast infections can also have no symptoms and may be found incidentally during routine physicals.  If it’s your first time, you should probably see your doctor to exclude the possibility of other infections.

It is possible to transmit the infection back and forth with your boyfriend so it is always a good idea to wait to resume sexual activity until after you have completed the treatment regime.

Most women can treat their yeast infections using over the counter medications but it is a good idea to see your doctor if you have fever, pelvic pain, or a colored or unpleasant-smelling discharge. It is also recommended that you see your doctor if you are under 12 years old, pregnant, or breast-feeding, or if you have diabetes or health conditions that weaken the immune system.
