Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently got tested for HIV in February of 2010. I know its negative so I am not concerned. Can the HIV test detect if I have an STD?
Dear Max: Testing for HIV is a two-step process. First, an inexpensive screening test is done. If that test is positive, a second test (Western blot) is done to confirm the result. But those test are very specific only to detect HIV, the other STDs have their own tests, specifics to detect their causing agents. Testing for STDs is simple and relatively painless. There are various methods for testing, depending on the condition. Some STDs can be detected through a urine sample or swab, while others may require a blood test |
