Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi Doctor I was just wondering can it possible that you can have chlamydia for 9 years without having any symptoms? I have only ever slept with 2 people in my life and 1 of them is my fiance now...you see I am with my fiance for 6 years and I have never cheated and I know he has never cheated either. I lost my virginity when I was 15 years old. I read on the internet that you can have chlamydia without known it..I never even thought about until I read it and I have no reason to think that I have it because neither I or my fiance has ever shown any symptoms. I have a very impatient and worrying personality(which is stupid, I know - i just cant stop my mind from wandering and thinking about the "what ifs". Please put my mind to rest and tell me your medical opinion. Thank you Tamara Dear Tamara: Hello, I recognize your concern about Chlamydia, Chlamydia is a bacterial infection of the genital tract that spreads easily through sexual contact. You may not know you have Chlamydia because the signs and symptoms of pain and fluid discharge dont show up right away, usually they could show after 3 weeks if they show up at all. Many people experience no signs and symptoms but after 6 years like you mentioned, certainly an increase in the probabilities of developing symptoms in either you or your should have occurred.In my opinion if you or your partners have not developed symptoms by now, the chances of having Chlamydia would be very minimal to none. It is just not common that even complications of Chlamydia might have developed by now. I hope I cleared your doubt. |
