Dear Ask The Doctor: My wife is pregnant and went to a new doctor who gave her a papsmear.... well the doctor called her and told her she has chlamydia. now she was tested in dec of 08 and then oct 09 and again in may of 2010. i have been deployed for the last 6 months and i am trying to find out if there are any ways a test can give a false positive and if so how? i dont believe my wife would be unfaithful and i havent been either. she said she had a yeast infection when they ran the test does that have anything to do with it Dear Brian: I understand how concerned you might be about Chlamydia diagnosis. This is a bacterial infection of the genital tract that spreads easily through sexual contact. People may not know that they have Chlamydia because the signs and symptoms of pain and fluid discharge don't show up right away, if they show up at all. Many people experience no signs and symptoms. Several types of tests can be used to find a Chlamydia infection. Most tests use a sample of body fluid from the affected area during a routine pap smear on women or through a sample taken from the tip of the urethra in men. They are very accurate and that they are very unlikely to have false-positive test results. Also these tests are specific to Chlamydia detecting either antigens or antibodies to Chlamydia and should not cause any cross reaction in the presence of Yeast infections at the time of the test. I would suggest your wife to get treatment for this entity to prevent pneumonia or an eye infection that can lead to blindness in your newborn, you should also get tested and receive treatment as well. I hope have cleared your doubt. |
