Contracting Chlamydia in a "Faithful" Relationship |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My fiance swears he has been faithful to me during the last seven months. He was diagnosed about a month ago with chlamydia and I began showing symptoms two weeks later. What is the likelihood that he has been faithful? Dear Cherie: Chlamydia is a bacterial infection of the genital tract that spreads easily through sexual contact; most commonly spreads through intercourse and other intimate contact between genitals and the rectal area of an infected person. People may not know they have Chlamydia because the signs and symptoms of pain and fluid discharge don't show up right away, if they show up at all. Usually the symptoms start one to three weeks after you've been exposed to Chlamydia. Even when signs and symptoms do occur, they're often mild and could be not noticed at all. Both you and your boyfriend would need treatment. Otherwise, the infection can be passed back and forth. It's possible to be re-infected with Chlamydia but sexual contact is the only way of contracting the disease. This means he could have contracted it before the seven months of being "faithful" and not had any symptoms during the seven months; It could mean he was not truthful about being faithful or the third possibility exists that he contracted it from you and you were unaware that you had the bacteria. I hope I cleared your doubts. |
