Azithromycin vs Tetracycline for treating Chlamydia |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My partner and I were treated for chlamydia together. She was prescribed azithromycin and I was given tetracycline. We went to different doctors. After completing tetracycline 250mg for 10 days (taking it 4 times a day), I was informed a month later that i should have been prescribed azithromycin by the Department of Health. So my question is, do I need to take azithromycin? Is azithromycin more effective than tetracycline when dealing with chlamydia, and does my partner need to get retested? Thank you for your time. Dear Mike: Certainly both medications might be used to treat Chlamydia. Azithromycin might be easier to take and therefore to comply with the treatment, that is why is somehow preferred by some physicians. I would suggest you to continue your treatment if already started and complete the 10 days as indicated, and follow up would be also necessary to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
