Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I was recently tested for chlamydia and was negative, does this mean I do not have HIV? I have not had sex in over 2 years now, am 19 and have not experienced any symptoms? Thanks
Dear Fred: Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the species chlamydia trachomatis . HIV on the other hand is the human immunodeficiency virus which ultimately leads to AIDS. Thus having had a negative test for chlamydia does not mean you are HIV free. You will have to get a test done specifically for HIV ie the ELISA test to rule out infection by this virus. All the best. |
