Dear Ask The Doctor: I had sexual intercourse on a Saturday; I went to my doctor to get tested whensday would my result of chlamydia come up? it came back negative but i read that it can take up to a week after contact to show up on a test.
Dear Amanda: Since the incubation period (time between the exposure to the point of establishment of the infection to be able to produce symptoms) for chlamydia infection is 1 to 3 weeks, symptoms may not appear until this duration after exposure. Irrespective of the appearance of the symptoms, it is best to test for the infection as soon as possible, sometimes it may take up to 4 to 7 days for the tests to become positive, if the person has been effectively infected. Thus it is recommended to go for a repeat test for confirmation, in cases of high suspicion for the chances of infection.
