Dear Ask The Doctor: Dear Doctor, Recently I found out that I have caught Chlamydia from a random encounter a few weeks ago, and have been given Doxycycline Hyclate for treatment. I am a little scared of the treatment because I have been told I am allergic to another type of treatment, but do not know what it was called. I have a severe peanut allergy, an I know I am allergic to Erythromycin. To help put my mind at ease, is this safe for me to take?
Dear Kursten: The antibiotics mainly used for the treatment of chlamydia include azithromycin or doxycycline. Azithromycin falls under the same group of medications as erythromycin (so not safe in your case), so may be the reason your doctor chose doxycycline over azithromycin as best option for your treatment. Thus doxycycline may a safe and effective choice for chlamydia treatment.
