Dear Ask The Doctor: I slept with a guy who had chlamydia that I found out about later. I went and gave a urine sample at my GP's. I'm a bit clumsy and the cup slipped in my hand so some of the urine spilled in to the toilet. I got the results back and they where negative... can I be certain the results are correct?
Dear Milla: Chlamydia is an infection transmitted when people have sexual relations. It is the most common Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) in the United States. Among adults, about 5% of the population is estimated to be infected. Among sexually active adolescent females, about 10% are infected.
Besides the doctor physical examination, which can show tenderness for women in the area of the sex organs, pus from the vagina or penis along with a high white-blood-cell count, and fever could indicate an infection, diagnostic lab tests should be ordered, these include: looking at samples of the discharge under a microscope , obtaining cultures to identify the disease-causing bacteria or sending urine to the lab to determine if you are infected, and regarding to your question it is not likely that the some urine spilled in the toilet has modified the result of your test. |
