Keratosis Pilaris aka "Chicken Skin": Simple Remedies and Other Options

Dear Ask The Doctor: I think i maye have Keratosis pilaris. What can i do to get rid of it?

Keratosis pilaris is a fairly common skin condition which usually affects adolescents and young adults. In some individuals, it persists in older age. The skin will have tiny bumps looking like chicken skin. It usually found in the upper arms and legs. The cause of keratosis pilaris is not known; it will worsen sometimes, and there may be periods of improvement. If you think you have keratosis pilaris, use mild soapless cleansers  and moisturizers after taking a bath (Cetaphil and Dove are examples of a good moisturizer). Apply these moisturizers within 5 minutes after taking a bath to seal in moisture. You may apply these on the skin 1x-2x a day. Remember that moisturizing is the mainstay in treating this condition. If this regimen does not offer effects, you may also try stronger moisturizers (urea creams, alpha hydroxy acid lotions, lactic acid lotions, etc). You may apply these creams 1x a day. Visible improvements may be seen after few or several weeks. If these over-the-counter topical agents still does not work, you may need to consult a dermatologist and ask for prescription creams. Topical agents containing Adapalene or Tretinoin may be helpful; however bear in mind that Tretinoin is very harmful in pregnancy. Tretinoin is also an effective anti-acne; some women are required to have contraception while on Tretinoin treatment because it has a high potential of harming the fetus. If these still will not work, other options are microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser treatments, etc. All of these treatments do not guarantee cure of keratosis pilaris however its appearance may be much better and less obvious. I do hope I have answered your question. Take care always.
